(HAMILTON) - Cold-weather thrill seekers are heading into the water today as the 33rd annual Jack Gibson Memorial Scholarship Polar Bear Plunge returns to Hamilton Lake.

The plunge is taking place this afternoon at the public beach, with participants scheduled to enter the lake at 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Hamilton Lions Club and continues a New Year's Eve tradition that draws residents willing to brave icy water for a good cause.

There is no cost to participate, but donations are encouraged. All proceeds raised today will benefit the Jack Gibson Memorial Scholarship fund, which supports local students in Hamilton Community and Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community Schools, both districts where Gibson taught for many years.

Spectators are welcome to attend. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, dress warmly ahead of the plunge, and be sure to have dry clothes to change into post-plunge.

The annual event is held rain or shine and marks one of the final community gatherings of the year in Hamilton.
