(LAGRANGE COUNTY) - A search for a young person who disappeared in Witmer Lake on Sunday has become a recovery effort.

According to Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement, the individual was last seen after jumping from a boat in the middle of the southeast side of the lake without a life jacket.

The search began around 5:01 p.m. Sunday. By 7:30 p.m., officials said rescue efforts had transitioned into a recovery operation.

Authorities requested that boaters stay off the lake while emergency crews conducted the search.

Multiple agencies responded, including Indiana Conservation Officers, Indiana State Police, the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department, the Orange Township Fire Department, the Johnson Township Fire Department and the Steuben County Dive Team.

Search crews have used boats, sonar equipment, an underwater drone, K-9 units and divers in an effort to locate the missing person.

Officials said the area where the individual went missing is approximately 20 feet deep. As of Sunday night, no recovery had been made. Authorities indicated the effort will continue.
