(ANGOLA) - Communities across Steuben County and neighboring Branch County will observe Memorial Day on Monday with ceremonies, parades and services honoring military members who died while serving in the nation's armed forces.

In Angola, the annual Memorial Day observance begins at 9 a.m. on the Public Square. Organized by Angola American Legion Post 31, the service will feature keynote speaker Garry L. Murdock, a veteran who served more than 33 years in the U.S. Army, National Guard and reserves. Angola Mayor Dave Martin will introduce Murdock.

In Fremont, American Legion Cassell Post 257 will organize a parade and service. Participants will gather at the Post Office at 10:30 a.m. before traveling east on Toledo Street to Wayne Street and then south to the Legion Post, where the service will be held. The Fremont American Legion Color Guard will also conduct cemetery services beginning at 8 a.m. at Jamestown Cemetery.

In Hamilton, a parade will begin with a beach ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday. A barbecue and pie sale will also be held at the Hamilton Fire Station.

In Pleasant Lake, a Memorial Day observance begins at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of Pleasant Lake Montessori School. The event will include remarks from an American Legion officer, followed by the presentation of colors by members of Angola American Legion Post 31.

Across the state line in Branch County, the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Four Corners Park in downtown Coldwater begins at 10 a.m. A parade will follow at approximately 10:30 a.m., traveling west on U.S. 12.

Coldwater's observance will also include a wreath-laying ceremony honoring Marines, Navy and Coast Guard service members near Oak Grove Cemetery, followed by a ceremony at the Gathering of Flags War Memorial.

In Union City, the Memorial Day parade will begin at the high school and continue to Riverside Cemetery. Planned stops include the North Broadway Street bridge, Veterans Memorial Park and the Civil War Memorial at the First Congregational Church for wreath-laying ceremonies.

In Quincy, the Memorial Day parade begins at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post. The procession will travel west on Chicago Street to West Street before continuing to Lakeview Cemetery for a remembrance service.

American Legion Post 259 in Bronson will host a Memorial Day ceremony at Bronson Cemetery on Wayne Street beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.

The biggest improvement is that it reads more like a local-service story and less like a series of event notices while still preserving all of the details from the source.
