(COLDWATER) - The Coldwater City Council has approved moving forward with the proposed sale of more than 17 acres of undeveloped land for a new housing development.

Council members voted Monday night to proceed with the sale of 17.323 acres off South Willowbrook Road to Michigan Housing Partnership, LLC, for $180,000.

The property is located east of the Sauk River Forest Condominium development.

The proposed project, operated by Allen Edwin Homes, would include about 36 attached single-family homes. Plans call for units ranging from 1,600 to 2,200 square feet, pending required government approvals.

Officials say the property was originally transferred to the city from the township in 2000. A previous residential development project was never completed, and the city later acquired the land through tax foreclosure.

The site currently does not have roadway access or utilities. Allen Edwin Homes would be responsible for infrastructure improvements needed for the project.

Company representatives told the council the development could be completed in four phases, with seven to 10 homes finished each year.

Coldwater City Attorney Amanda O'Boyle told council members Monday's action was only the first step in the process.

Under the Coldwater City Charter, the purchase agreement must remain open for public inspection for 30 days. A final council vote on the sale is expected June 22.
