SOUTH BEND - A fire over the weekend in South Bend resulted in the death of five children.

According to the South Bend Fire Department the fire broke out at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 21 on North LaPorte Av.

The victims of the fire include 17-month-old Faith Smith, 4-year-old Angelo Smith, 5-year-old Deontay Smith, 9-year-old Davida Smith and 10-year-old Demetis Smith.

Their oldest sibling 11-year-old Angel Smith remains in critical condition at a hospital in Indianapolis.

The father of the children escaped with minor injuries after he tried to rescue his kids.

“Tragically, five of these individuals, all children, would later be pronounced deceased,” the South Bend Fire Department said in its statement

“One survivor was urgently transported to Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to a specialized pediatric burn center in Indianapolis for further treatment.”

Records also state two firefighters were injured in the fire.

One firefighter fell through a hole and landed on the first floor before exiting the home through a window. That firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated, and is now recovering at home.

The second firefighter received minor burns and has since returned to work.

The South Bend Fire Department said it is working with state and local authorities to investigate the cause of the fire.
