LAGRANGE COUNTY - A Sturgis tow truck driver was killed following a crash on the Indiana Toll Road in LaGrange County.

The Indiana State Police said on Thursday, January 19 at approximately 9:40 a.m. in the median of the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker (MM) 114.2 a officials were on scene of a previous crash involving a semi cleaning up spilled diesel fuel and wreckage.

A pickup truck with an enclosed trailer traveling eastbound lost control, went through the median and sideswiped the tow truck that was parked on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes.

The pickup truck then struck the tow truck driver and the semi from the initial crash.

The tow truck driver, identified as Martin Troyer, 63, of Sturgis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A worker with the remediation company cleaning the diesel spill also suffered non-life-threatening injures.

The Indiana State Police said say roads were slick at the time of the crash due to the snow, but the 31-year-old New York operating the pickup truck was traveling too fast for the weather conditions.

The accident remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police who will turn their findings over to the LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office.
