ANGOLA, IN – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office says they are assisting the Steuben County Health Department and the Humane Shelter of Steuben County with an investigation into allegations of animal cruelty and neglect that occurred at a York Township residence east of Angola.

Deputies were called to the 1900 block of North County Road 600 East earlier this week in an attempt to locate an individual reportedly having a medical issue who had called 911 from a different location seeking immediate medical treatment. Upon arrival, officers found a large number of animals inside of what appeared to be “unsuitable conditions.”

It was also learned the 911 caller had been picked up by a friend and was taken to a hospital.

Investigators says the homeowner is cooperating and voluntarily surrendered the animals involved.

The Sheriff’s Department says criminal charges may be sought through the Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County says over 80 dogs were found on site. According to the shelter’s Facebook page, the shelter was in desperate need of donations and fosters as a result of the animals found.

Anyone interested in contributing monetarily or helping in any way is asked to contact the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County (260.833.2877).
