Family Displaced After Sunday Fire
Monday, October 17, 2022

HILLSDALE, MI — A Hillsdale family has been displaced from their home after a weekend fire.

The Hillsdale City Fire Department was called to a downtown location at 12 Street West Street around 8 a.m. Sunday. First units on the scene found heavy smoke coming from the two story structure.

Initial reports indicated a man may have been in the basement but a primary search of the home by firefighters from Hillsdale and Jonesville showed he was not home at the time of the fire. Other family members managed to escape the structure prior to firefighters arriving on scene and took shelter at a neighbor's home.

A number of family pets perished in the incident, but no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials believe it likely started in the basement and spread upwards through interior walls.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Division is investigating to determine a cause of the blaze.
