(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new state law taking effect January 1 will require Hoosiers to update their vehicle registration if they change the exterior color of their car.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says the update applies to passenger vehicles that are repainted, receive a partial or full vinyl wrap, or have an existing wrap removed. Vehicle owners have 30 days to notify the BMV after making the change.

Under the new law, drivers who fail to update their registration could receive a warning from law enforcement. More serious penalties may apply if a vehicle's color was changed after being used in the commission of a crime and the change was not reported, which could result in a Class C misdemeanor charge.

The BMV says the update is intended to help law enforcement accurately identify vehicles and improve public safety.

Drivers can update their vehicle color by visiting a BMV branch, using a BMV Connect kiosk during a scheduled registration renewal, or logging into their online BMV account. Branch locations, kiosk information, and online services are available through the BMV's website.
