Holiday Heart Risk: Cardiac Deaths Surge Around Christmas

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The American Heart Association is warning that the winter holidays are the deadliest time of year for heart attacks, with deaths peaking in late December. Research shows more Americans die from heart attacks on Christmas Day than any other day of the year, followed closely by December 26 and New Year's Day. Studies in Europe show similar trends, including a 15% jump in heart attacks during the holidays and an even sharper spike on Christmas Eve--especially among older adults and people with diabetes or existing heart disease.

Doctors say cold weather, holiday stress, rich food and alcohol, and skipped medications all contribute. But one of the biggest dangers is people ignoring warning signs and delaying medical care--especially in rural areas, where emergency response times can be longer.

The Heart Association urges anyone experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or sudden weakness to call 9-1-1 immediately, even during holiday celebrations.

Officials also stress the importance of learning Hands-Only CPR, which can save lives when cardiac arrests happen at home or in public. They encourage families to use holiday gatherings to talk about family health history and take simple steps to reduce risk--like managing stress, staying active, eating in moderation, and sticking to prescribed medications.
