(HAMMOND) - An Indiana State Trooper was shot during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning on Interstate 94 in Hammond, and the suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire with responding officers.

According to Indiana State Police, the trooper stopped a gray Hyundai Elantra shortly after midnight on eastbound I-94 near the Indianapolis Boulevard exit for a traffic violation.

During the stop, the trooper requested immediate assistance after encountering two non-compliant occupants inside the vehicle. Police said the trooper advised dispatch that he was holding the suspects at gunpoint while waiting for backup.

An officer from the Hammond Police Department and two officers from the Lake County Sheriff's Department were the first to arrive.

As officers approached the vehicle, police say the driver produced a handgun, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and responding officers.

The driver was struck during the shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun they say was used by the suspect.

The Lake County Coroner identified the deceased as Aaron Barnes, 34, of Gary. An autopsy is pending.

The state trooper suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. A Hammond police officer transported the trooper to Community Hospital in Munster. He was later transferred to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

No other officers were injured.

Police said the trooper's K-9 partner was present during the incident but was not hurt.

A 34-year-old female passenger from the vehicle was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail on a 48-hour probable cause hold. Investigators have 48 hours to submit charges or release her.

Indiana State Police said the investigation remains in its early stages and information released so far is preliminary. The agency said the name of the injured trooper will be released at a later time.
