(COLUMBUS) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol says 158 impaired drivers were arrested during a three-day statewide enforcement campaign conducted with more than 100 law enforcement agencies across the state.

The OVI enforcement effort took place May 14 through May 16 and included sobriety checkpoints and additional patrols in multiple Ohio communities.

According to the highway patrol, officers checked more than 18,500 vehicles during the operation.

Of the 158 impaired-driving arrests, 51 occurred directly at checkpoint locations. Troopers also reported making four felony arrests during the enforcement effort.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Charles Jones said the checkpoints are intended to deter impaired driving and improve safety on Ohio roadways.

"The goal of these statewide checkpoints is to deter and intercept impaired drivers, ensuring the safety of all motorists on Ohio's roadways," Jones said.

The highway patrol said impaired driving continues to be a significant factor in serious and fatal crashes across the state. According to agency data, Ohio has recorded nearly 80 fatal crashes and more than 200 serious-injury crashes involving impaired drivers so far this year.

Officials are encouraging motorists to plan ahead by using a designated driver, rideshare service or other transportation option if alcohol is involved.

Drivers who suspect an impaired motorist can contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol by dialing #677.
