(ANGOLA) - Students at Trine University helped low-income residents file more than 120 tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program this semester.
The university said student volunteers completed 122 tax returns, marking a more than 58 percent increase over 2025. Officials estimate the service saved taxpayers roughly $30,000 in preparation fees.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, commonly known as VITA, assists people earning $70,000 or less, individuals with disabilities, and limited-English-speaking taxpayers who need help filing returns.
Students participating in the program earn IRS certification while enrolled in Trine's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance coursework.
