(FORT WAYNE) - With a winter storm moving into Indiana this weekend, State Police are putting out a clear warning: any abandoned vehicles on interstates, U.S. highways, or state roads will be towed. The Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post says abandoned cars can block plows and create dangerous conditions as INDOT crews work to clear snow and ice. Troopers also say stranded vehicles are at high risk of being hit during slide-off crashes.

Drivers who break down are urged to make towing arrangements immediately. If your vehicle isn't where you left it, or if you need help, you can call the Fort Wayne Post at 260-432-8661.

As the storm hits, troopers are asking Hoosiers to travel cautiously and keep these safety tips in mind:

• Leave early and slow down

• Buckle up and secure kids in proper safety seats

• Put the phone away

• Increase following distance

• Stay patient and avoid road rage

• Keep winter emergency supplies in your vehicle

• Never drink and drive

• And if you crash or slide off the road, call 911

State Police say they want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend -- and get home safely.
