(MACKINAC ISLAND) - Mackinac Island has been named the No. 1 summer travel destination in the United States, topping a list of iconic vacation spots from coast to coast.
The ranking from U.S. News and World Report readers and editors places the Michigan island ahead of major national park destinations including Glacier, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and the Adirondacks.
The honor adds to Mackinac Island's growing national travel reputation, driven by its car-free streets, horse-drawn carriages, historic downtown, lake views and family-friendly summer atmosphere.
The island's peak tourism season is now getting underway, with visitors arriving for bike trips, ferry rides, the Grand Hotel, Fort Mackinac and the upcoming Lilac Festival.
For Michigan tourism leaders, the ranking cements what many travelers already know: Mackinac Island remains one of the country's signature warm-weather getaways.
