Indiana Gas Tax Rises In April, Bigger Increase Possible In May

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana drivers will see a slight increase in the state's gasoline use tax starting April 1, with an even larger jump possible next month as pump prices continue to climb.

The Indiana Department of Revenue says the April gasoline use tax rate rises to 17.2 cents per gallon, up from 15.3 cents in March.

Because the tax is recalculated each month using the statewide average retail gas price, another increase is likely in May if prices remain near the $4 per gallon mark.

State figures show the April rate was based on an average pre-tax gasoline price of $2.45 per gallon from mid-February through mid-March.

But with current prices now hovering close to $4 statewide, the May rate could climb by another 10 cents or more, potentially pushing Indiana's gas use tax to its highest level since the 2022 fuel price spike.

Governor Mike Braun has previously said he would not rule out possible relief options if Hoosiers continue to feel pressure at the pump.
