(AVILLA) - The Avilla Town Council is moving toward legal action to remove its clerk-treasurer from office.
According to WFFT, council members voted Wednesday to begin legal proceedings against Clerk-Treasurer Rita Grocock, citing neglect of duties under state law.
Town officials say Grocock has not reported to work since June of 2025 and has had little to no direct communication with the town since extending medical leave last summer.
Because she is an elected official, Grocock cannot be fired, and the town says it must continue paying her salary and benefits.
In the meantime, the deputy clerk has been running the office with assistance from a consultant.
Town leaders say they've exhausted other options and are now seeking court action to resolve the situation.
