(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Federal officials say more than 550 commercial driving schools that train truck and bus drivers must shut down after investigators uncovered serious safety failures.

The U.S. Department of Transportation found many schools used unqualified instructors, failed to properly test students and did not adequately train drivers in critical skills. The action follows inspections of more than 1,400 locations nationwide.

Officials say the crackdown is part of a broader effort to improve highway safety after several fatal crashes involving commercial vehicles.

Most schools affected are smaller programs, including some run by school districts, while dozens more remain under investigation.
