(TOLEDO) - A 77-year-old Whitehouse man has been indicted on a grand theft charge after authorities say he stole more than $22,000 from a local Boy Scouts troop over a two-year period.
A Lucas County grand jury indicted Donald Marion for allegedly taking approximately $22,500 from Scout Troop 97 between August 2023 and December 2025, according to reporting from WTOL-TV.
Whitehouse police said troop leaders discovered discrepancies in the organization's finances and contacted authorities. During an interview with investigators, Marion allegedly admitted to taking the money, telling officers he was experiencing financial hardship and used troop funds to cover losses connected to his casting business in Weston.
It remains unclear whether the stolen funds can be recovered.
Scouting America's Erie Shores Council said Marion's status as an adult volunteer has been revoked and that he has been placed in the organization's Volunteer Screening Database, which bars him from future participation in Scouting programs. The council added it is cooperating with law enforcement as the case proceeds.
The investigation and legal process are ongoing.
