(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will introduce a new specialty license plate for amateur radio operators beginning Feb. 13.

The Amateur Radio License Plate will be available to Indiana residents who hold a current Federal Communications Commission license to operate an amateur radio station. Each plate will display the operator's assigned call sign and may be used on passenger vehicles and trucks weighing 11,000 pounds or less.

The new design recognizes the contributions of licensed amateur radio operators, who often serve in volunteer roles during emergencies and severe weather events. Operators frequently work alongside public safety agencies, emergency management officials and the National Weather Service to provide backup communications when traditional systems fail.

"The Amateur Radio License Plate is a point of pride for Indiana amateur radio operators who dedicate their time and technical skills to serving our communities," said Bob Burns, Indiana Section Manager for the Amateur Radio Relay League.

BMV Commissioner Kevin Garvey said the plate honors those who step up during emergencies and help keep communities informed.

Operators must visit a BMV branch location to apply for the plate and provide documentation verifying their FCC license.

More information, including branch locations and hours, is available at IN.gov/BMV.
