(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan says she will not comply with a Department of Justice inquiry targeting her and may pursue legal action, calling the investigation unconstitutional and politically motivated.
In a video posted to social media Thursday, Slotkin said she sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and DOJ attorney Jeanine Pirro, informing them she will refuse an interview and will not cooperate with the inquiry. She said the investigation is an attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate critics into silence.
According to reporting from Gray DC, the inquiry stems from a video posted in November by six Democratic lawmakers with military and intelligence backgrounds. In that video, the lawmakers reminded service members of their duty to refuse unlawful orders.
The video drew a sharp response from Donald Trump, who publicly called for the lawmakers to be arrested and investigated. Slotkin said the DOJ case against her remains ongoing.
In her letter, Slotkin also requested the Department of Justice preserve all records related to the inquiry, stating she may sue for violations of her constitutional rights.
Another lawmaker featured in the November video, Mark Kelly, has already filed suit against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over threats involving his military rank and retirement.
Slotkin said refusing to comply is necessary to prevent what she described as the continued weaponization of federal law enforcement against elected officials and private citizens.
