(COLDWATER) - The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities will celebrate a major milestone in 2026, marking 135 years of service to the community.

Founded in 1891, CBPU began by providing electricity for street lighting. Over more than a century, it has grown into a full-service municipal utility, supplying electric, water, wastewater, and telecommunications services to residents and businesses across Coldwater.

Today, CBPU ranks as Michigan's third-largest municipal electric utility by energy sales. Its water system has expanded from a single 300,000-gallon tower to three towers delivering more than 3.5 million gallons of water daily. The wastewater department now treats more than 3 million gallons each day, while CBPU's telecommunications division has evolved from basic cable service to high-speed fiber internet.

CBPU Director Paul Jakubczak said the anniversary is a chance to reflect on the utility's growth and the people behind it.

"As we celebrate 135 years, it's important to recognize our humble beginnings and the many improvements that have enhanced quality of life in Coldwater," Jakubczak said. "We're grateful to the employees, past and present, who helped make that possible."

Plans are underway for anniversary events throughout the year, including a customer appreciation open house and luncheon scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7.
