Michigan's Unemployment Rate Drops In February
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, March 26, 2021

LANSING – Michigan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate went down during the month of February.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says the State's unemployment rate dropped from 5.7 percent in January to 5.2 percent in February. It's the second consecutive month of labor force withdrawl, down by 42,000. Despite the jobless rate reduction, the state employment level edged down slightly over the month (-14,000) as did the number of unemployed (-28,000).

The U.S. unemployment rate inched down in February by one-tenth of a percent to 6.2. That's a full percent higher than Michigan's. Wayne Rourke, Associated Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, says the Michigan jobless rate reduction primarily reflected fewer persons active in the state labor market. He says a separate business survey revealed a significant level of job recalls in the restaurant industry in February.
