MDHHS Says Contact Winter Sports May Resume
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, February 5, 2021

LANSING – Contact winter sports will be allowed to resume in Michigan.

During a Thursday afternoon media update, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that due to the reduced cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, contact winter sports and practices will be able to resume beginning next week. Dr. Elizabeth Hertel spoke and shared that this change came about after she signed an amended epidemic order that allows team contact sports to resume practices and competitions with precautions on February 8. This includes basketball, hockey, wrestling and more.

Hertel says the order calls for all student-athletes to wear masks in all games and practices. In sports where they can't remain masked, student-athletes must be tested consistent with the testing protocols that will be issued by the MDHHS on February 7. Hertel says spectators are allowed with up to 250 people in stadiums that seat less than 10,000, and up to 500 people at venues that seat over 10,000 people.
