Friday, July 24, 2020

At the request of the Auburn Police Department (APD), the Indiana State Police are currently investigating a shooting incident involving an Auburn officer that occurred Thursday Morning in Auburn.

Preliminary information from the investigation revealed that at approximately 11:30 A.M. Thursday, an Auburn police officer initiated a traffic stop with a motorcycle at the corner of Phillip Street and DeKalb Avenue in Auburn. The motorcycle was occupied by a white male adult driver and a white female adult passenger. During the course of the traffic stop the officer approached the driver, whom had quickly hopped off the motorcycle. As the officer approached the driver, at close proximity the motorcycle driver brandished what then appeared to be a handgun, pointing it at the officer. The officer discharged at least one round from his duty weapon, striking the driver.

Backup officers from APD quickly arrived on scene, and immediately began providing first aid to the injured driver until medics arrived and took over. The driver was transported from the scene by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. The female passenger was not injured in the confrontation. The medical condition of the driver is unknown at this time.

Auburn Police Department officials have stated that per their department policy, the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
