Angola Mayor and Task Force Cancel 4th of July Festivities
By: Sheila McCrea - Saturday, May 9, 2020

ANGOLA, IN - COVID-19 has caused a change in everyone’s life from their home life to their jobs. The same is true with the City of Angola.

Anglo Mayor Dick Hickman made what he called one of his “toughest decisions thus far” on Friday.

Unfortunately, the Mayor and his special task force are canceling the 4th of July Parade and festivities at the park including the fireworks. However, they are working on having city of Angola fireworks at another time by combining it with another event.

Hickman said, “This is a great event that everyone loves. But it takes a lot of planning and preparation. Also, it would put hundreds of people in close proximity”

Angola officials are also canceling “Pig Out in the Park” on June 4th, and the Hubie Ashcraft Concert on June 5th have been cancelled.

Hickman said at this time they are waiting to see how COVID-19 is effecting our county for later events like the Cruise-In and the second Music in the Park event. He added, “Everyone is trying to figure out how to move on with their lives, work, relationships, and more”, and the “business of the City of Angola is no different”.

The Memorial Day event on the circle on Monday, May 25th is still happening according to the mayor. City officials are asking that people practice social distancing and wear masks. Hickman said Monument Circle is a big area and “everyone should be able to spread around and have plenty of room”.

Secondly, city officials have decided to go ahead with the citywide garage sales on May 21st through May 25th.

Hickman said he and the task force are trying to start moving the community slowly in a positive direction. They are asking residents who attend the garage sales or any other events to stay safe, practice social distancing, wear masks, and be patient with each other.
