Candidate Filings Came In Mass Before Deadline
Monday, February 10, 2020

Filing for offices for Steuben County’s May Primary Election nearly doubled prior to the deadline to file this past Friday at Noon.

Within Steuben County, there will be three countywide races that will go before the voters in the primary, one on the Democratic ballot and two on the Republican side.

On the Democratic side, the race for coroner will be between Lauren Vogel and Donald Mason Jr. with the winner to go against against former Republican coroner Rodney Snyder, in the general election.

The other battles will see a Republican primary battle for Steuben County Board of Commissioners, Middle District where Incumbent Commissioner Jim Crowl is being challenged by Ken Shelton, who currently holds the District 2 seat on the Steuben County Council.

Also running for commissioner is Wil Howard, who is running for the Republican nomination for the South District seat that is being vacated by Commission Board President Ron Smith.

Meanwhile on the federal level, Republicans will have to decide who they want as their congressman as Incumbent Representative Jim Banks of Columbia City is running again, and seeking his third term in the Capitol, but this year will face a primary challenge from Dr. Chris Magiera of Warsaw.

Representatives Denny Zent, R-Angola, and Ben Smaltz, R-Auburn, have filed their candidacies with both running unopposed. Zent will have opposition in the fall however as he is being challenged by Democrat Michael Stephenson.

Steuben Superior Court Judge William Fee is also unopposed for reelection.
