AUBURN — Weather conditions were a factor in a Saturday morning accident involving a citizen vehicle and a police vehicle. The crash occurred at around 9:42 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-69 at the 328 mile marker, west of Auburn.

According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Samual C. Crago, age 20 of Fort Wayne, was driving a Ford Mustang when he struck a DeKalb County Sheriff’s car driven by Deputy Mathew P. Haber, age 38 of Auburn.

Reports indicate that Officer Haber was inside his patrol car, south of the County Road 48 overpass bridge, with his car’s emergency lights on. Haber was moving cars to the passing lane, providing protection for another officer who was working at a crash north of the bridge.

Investigators say Crago’s vehicle approached the bridge, lost control and slid sideways, with it’s driver’s side striking the rear of Haber’s patrol car.

Authorities say Crago had severe bleeding to his face.

Deputy Matt Haber was taken to Parkview DeKalb Hospital in Auburn to be checked out for complaints of back pain. Haber’s K-9 partner, Rico, was transported to Auburn Hills Animal Hospital in Auburn for abrasions to his forehead.

Crago told crash investigators he was traveling approximately 70 mph. He was cited for Speed too Fast for Weather Conditions.

Assisting the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department was the Indiana State Police, Auburn Fire Department, and DeKalb County EMS.

The Indiana State Police investigated the crash.
