Shipshewana Woman Drowns In Cass County Lake
Wednesday, August 14, 2019

A northern Indiana woman lost her life in a southern Michigan lake.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says at 7:29 PM Tuesday his department was called to investigate a swimming accident on Long Lake in Porter Township. A group of seven people from Indiana were wake boarding and stopped to take a break. While they were stopped, 19 year old Janelle Miller of Shipshewana left the boat to take a swim.

Shortly after she entered the water, the other passengers were unable to locate
Miller. The passengers called 911 and then dove into the water in an attempt to find Miller.

Sheriff's Deputies, along with the SEPSA Fire Department and the SEPSA Ambulance arrived and also tried to locate Miller. West Michigan Air Care was called in to fly over the lake, but were not able to find Miller.

The Cass County Marine Division and the Van Buren County Dive team both arrived and at 10:56 PM they found Miller's body. Behnke says Miller was not using a life jacket. The incident remains under investigation.
